一、总述中国古代美学境界
简单来讲，中国古代美学可以分为三个时期。第一个时期是由庄老为代表兴起的，第二个历史时期开始于魏晋南北朝时期，第三个历史时期是以明清时期的李贽，汤显祖等为代表。通过这三个时期可以对中国美学境界的发展和演变有一个很好的了解。
二、分述三个历史时期
(一)老庄时期美学境界
老子可以说是中国古代美学的起 点，老子提出的一系列美学范畴如“道”、“气”、“象”、“有”、“无”、“虚”、“实”、“”、“妙”、“虚静”、“玄鉴”、“自然”等等观点。对中国古典美学产生了极大影响。
“道”是老子哲学的最高范畴和中心范畴。从《老子》全书看“道”包含着以下性质和特点：第一，“道”产生于万物。第二，“道”是原始的混沌。第三，“道”没有意识，没有目的。第四，“道”自己运动。第五“道”是“无”与“有”的统一。从中我们可以看出老子用道否定了有意志的“上帝”、“天命”。我们可以说老子的哲学体系在整体上有一个唯物论的倾向，了解了这一点我们就可以更好的理解老子“道”的境界了。老子说：道可道，非常“道”，名可名，非常“名”。无，名天地之始；有，名万物之母，故常“无”，欲以观其妙；常“有”，欲以观其徼。此两者，同出而异名，同谓之玄，玄之又玄，众妙之门[1]。”
