前言
白蜡条，容易栽植，又是一种良好的固堤植物，历来受到学者们关注。吴建民和田俊华撰写《白蜡条林经营技术》，从养根、圆墩、抹芽、打杈、水肥管理到疏根复壮及最后的更新过程介绍了白蜡条林经营技术。王广钦、樊巍等撰写《白蜡树生态习性的初步研究》，分别介绍了白蜡树的形态特征、适生环境、根系发育三个方面。杨有乾的《白蜡条害虫生活习性与防治》，结合白蜡条害虫的生活习性，提出了有效防治害虫的方法。杨吉华、王华田等撰写的《白蜡条林产量及水土保持效益的研究》，对山东省山丘地区不同立地条件不同密度的白蜡条林产量及水土保持效益进行了比较系统的调查研究。
条编是商水县邓城的一项重要传统手工业项目，而条编所采用的原材料——白蜡条在邓城分布广泛。白蜡条，又称“白蜡树”、“白蜡杆”，属乔木，奇数羽状复叶，对生；小叶子一般长有5-9个，小叶呈现圆形或椭圆形，叶子的边缘有锯齿状或者波浪形的锯齿，花序属于圆锥形。它的花期一般为四月份至五月份，而果熟期通常是一年中的七月至八月。白蜡条产于河南省各个山区，在省内东部平原地区种植较多，其中尤以宁陵县为突出代表。白蜡条适合生长于沙土地中，在山坡旁边、水沟旁边易于繁殖、生长，具有一定的耐盐碱性。当白蜡条长成白蜡树时，其木材细密坚韧，是建筑等用途的优良品种；与此同时，它的枝条细长柔软，是进行条编的理想原材料；此外，在它的树叶之中还可以放养白蜡虫，而由白蜡虫产生的“白蜡”是一种优秀的工业原材料。此外，白蜡树还是优良的用材树种，它可以作为建筑、桥梁、枕木、枪托、舰船、物理仪器等的原材料加以利用，是国家规定的三级保护树木。
