斯威夫特出生在一个破落的贵族家庭，一生坎坷使他变得愤世嫉俗，饱览上层腐恶更令他愤懑不已。这种放荡不羁，追求自由和平的性格激励他创作了《格列佛游记》这部巨作。小说全篇最然在讲游记故事，其实另有深层含义。这就是为什么斯威夫特被誉为讽刺艺术家的原因。
1.1十七世纪的英国时代背景
斯威夫特所处的英国时代正是政治动荡不安的时代。1688年的英国发生了历史上美其名曰的“光荣革命”，从此英国的政治制度便是由议会与内阁统治，而他们却变成了剥削与压榨人民和殖民地的有力工具。英国政治充满贪污腐败，黑幕重重。
