1。 Introduction

1。1 Research Background

Based on the performance that the senior high school students make in English writing over these years, students’ mastery of adverbial clauses is far from satisfaction。 Many students find difficulty in telling types of adverbial clauses and choosing conjunctive word because some of the forms and rules do not exist in the Chinese language。 In other word, students’ interlanguage phenomenon reflects both the influence of native language and the insufficient knowledge of the target language。 Hence, the study of learners’ language is of great importance in applied linguistics。 

Large quantities of researches on adverbial clauses have been carried out from various perspectives。 Most of them are carried out according to a linguistic theory but are seldom linked to the interlanguage study。 Therefore, a more detailed study on the interlanguage of Chinese English learners is needed。 Moreover, in present error analysis, most researches on interlanguage are restricted to college students。 But empirical studies on errors in using adverbial clause especially targeted at the senior high school students are rare。 Hence, the author believes that this thesis makes great sense and hopes to make a little contribution to the collection of interlanguage studies。 

1。2 Significance of the Study

On the ground of the empirical study, this thesis intends to figure out leading error types and major possible error sources among senior high school students。 The study is of both theoretical and practical significance。 As far as theoretical importance is concerned, the study on interlanguage belongs to the exploration of second language acquisition and it sheds new light on the process of second language acquisition due to the fact that any research on interlanguage is sure to enrich the theories of second language acquisition。
