1。2 Significance of the research

Through specific measures of self-control strategies, this study helps the students in high school improve their English performance and provids them with effective and suitable ways for learning English。 At the same time, it also offers scientific and effective reference for the educators to design strategies for improving students’ academic achievement。 And students of different grades can’t be generalized, our study also gives a method for the preliminary investigation to have a more comprehensive knowledge of the students’ learning situation。

1。3 Purpose of the research

The purpose of our research is to find out the relationship between self-control and English performance of senior school students。 Whether self-control strategies do influence on improving students’ English performance, what kind of strategy can be the most effective on their English performance and will the results change with different grades。

2。 Literature Review

This chapter gives a general description to the definition of self-control, self-control capacity and self-control strategies, the effects they have on students’ academic achievements。

2。1 Self-Control 

2。1。1 The Concept of self-control 

Self-control contains the meaning that in order to reach the certain goals people use their willpower to overcome impulses(Carver, C。 S。, & Scheier, M。 F。 1981)。 self-control is also regarded as the process that people modify their inner responses such as their emotion, thoughts or the tendencies of their behavioral( Baumeister, Heatherton, & Tice, 1994)。 From a general perspective, self-control can be defined as overriding or altering a predominant response tendency(eg。 Alex Bertrams 2012)

2。1。2 Self-control on the achievements of human being。 

 People with high self-control are more likely to be adapted to the society and are easier to get great social relationships with others。 And it can also constructs to a life with more achievements which encompasses aspects such as study, work and even promote the healthy behavior in our life。(Tangney, Baumeister, & Boone, 2004 )。。 Conversely, lacking of self-control, it is tough for people to get great outcomes, like great performance in school or perfect performance in work。 What’s more, they are easily to be aggressive and sometimes be depressed(Baumeister, Heatherton, & Tice, 1994, Shoda, Mischel, & Peake, 1990)。 Therefore ,higher self-control is beneficial for the students in all life。文献综述

2。2 Self-control and second language learning 

2。2。1 Self-control and learning in general

The value of self-control for students is that it can really do benefits for improving their academic achievements, and several present researches show that it really does。 Self-control do great benefit to students’ grades, the higher self-control produce a higher outcome of academic achievements。( Tangney et al) Self –control capacity can be regarded as the ability to exert self-control。 Dispositional self-control capacity is another reliable predictor of achievement (e。g。, Duckworth & Seligman, 2005) Inpiduals who are dispositionally higher in self-control capacity are more successful in exerting self-control compared to inpiduals lower in self-control capacity。 Higher self-control capacity has frequently been demonstrated to be beneficial over lower self-control capacity。 In order to achieve better self-control, it is inevitable for us to improve self-control capacity。 Students’ self-control capacity can also moderate the relation between students' minimal grade goals and their actual grades (Alex Bertrams 2012)。 Students with higher self-control capacity are more likely to reach the minimal goal of grades than those with lower one, and the students with higher self-control capacity are tend to set the higher minimal goals for themselves while those with lower self-control capacity are tend to set lower goals 。 What’s more ,NFC(need for cognition)is also positive related to self-control capacity, those who with higher NFC are more motivated to engage in effortful information processing, which requires the same energy resource as self-control。 The higher NFC promotes the regular use of energy resource and strengthen it, which does great help for exerting self-control。 (Alex Bertrams ⁎, Oliver Dickhäuser)So I suggest that activities can be designed to improve the students’ cognition to realize the importance of their academic achievements, it can help to develop the self-control capacity and exerting self-control successfully, then get a better grades at last。
