Abstract “The Vampire Diaries” is a set of drama about youth and magic. Since the drama was first presented on screen in 2009, it was extremely loved by thousands of fans in the world. This thesis tries to analyze the vampire images in The Vampire Diaries. First it gives a brief introduction to vampires of literature. Secondly, the paper analyzes some representative good and bad vampire characters in details from the view of the Freud. The drama represented by the Salvatore brothers to change traditional vampire image of terror and had a very “human” character. One of them who named Stefan is good vampire and another who named Damon played a bad vampire role, he hunt human beings as his food. But when he met a girl named Elena, his life is changing. Thirdly, the episode of “the vampire diaries” is going to discuss the social realities and problems reflected in the struggle among Damon’s id, ego and superego by analyzing the protagonist Damon’s characteristics from Freud’s personality theory. Lastly, the paper gives a conclusion.

I. Introduction
L.J. Smith is an American author. Her novel, The Vampire Diaries, is released in 1991 to rave reviews. Like Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight, L.J. Smith’s book bridges the gap between teen and adult fiction. Because of the demand of readers, she published her sophomore effort, the sequel—the dusk, the shadow of the soul and midnight. She has acquired the film rights to those books. The series premiered on The CW Television Network on September 10, 2009, and is currently in its fifth season, which premiered on September 15, 2013.
Few researches have been done on The Vampire Diaries due to its new appearance. There are many domestic scholars have carried on the analysis to The Vampire Diaries. This thesis tries to analyze the vampire character in The Vampire Diaries, which no scholar has done researches on this field, and attempt to have a deep study of the implications that the vampire character reflect in this novel.
Sigmund Freud (German pronunciation), born Sigismund Schlomo Freud, was an Austrian neurologist who founded the psychoanalytic method of psychiatry. Freud is best known for his theories of the unconscious mind and the defense mechanism of repression, and for creating the clinical practice of psychoanalysis for treating psychopathology through dialogue between a patient, technically referred to as an “analysand", and a psychoanalyst. He was an early neurological researcher into cerebral palsy, and a prolific essayist, drawing on psychoanalysis to contribute to the history, interpretation and critique of culture.
