Vocabulary has an fundamental position in the English language teaching。 An increasing number of teachers think that vocabulary teaching is a significant component in English class。 However, investigations show that most students feel it difficult to master the words they have learned。On the basis of semantic field theory, a word does not exist in isolation, but always forms a semantic field together with other related words。 So we can make use of different theories to guide the teaching of lexical items belonging to different semantic relations。 

In this article, we hold that teaching vocabulary through constructing semantic relations of words is an effective strategy of vocabulary teaching。 Constructing synonymy, antonymy, hyponymy, collocation of words can be helpful in vocabulary teaching。 Teachers can apply linguistic theories to constructing sense relations。 The analysis of semantic features of lexical items is a useful tool for constructing synonymy。 The application of markedness theory is helpful in teaching antonymy。 When it comes to teaching hyponymy, what can be employed in class is the theory of basic level category 。 They all have great effect on deepening the understanding of the new words。

This thesis is pided into six parts。 The first section is an introduction, making a layout for the whole thesis。 The second introduces some relevant theories。 The third presents the  semantic relations, synonymy, antonymy, hoponymy and collocation under the guidance of different theories respectively。 The fourth is an integrated pedagogical procedure。 The fifth  discusses an experiment whose purpose is to measure the effect of constructing semantic relations in vocabulary teaching。 The last is a conclusion, summarizing the thesis。

The English lexical items are bound together as a huge vocabulary family by the innate relationship, under the name of sense-relations。 The whole set of sense relations in which a lexical item is related to other items determines the sense of a particular lexical item, which entails that a certain lexical item may assume various sense-relations。 Just as Kempson says in his Semantic Theory。"We can characterize the relations between a large web of item。 For lexical items do not just stand in one relationship to the other lexical item, but each stands in relationships to many other items。"( Kempson,86)

A semantic field is a series of words related in meanings, which is also known as a word field, lexical field, semantic system。 The huge word store of a language can be regarded as a composition of a crowd of meaning field, like "vegetable" field or "color" field。 This is termed as the theory of Field created by Trier, a German linguist。 This theory highlights the meaning of words in different semantic groups。(Wang,66) Trier saw vocabulary as "an integrated system of lexemes interrelated in sense"。  According to him, words of a language can be assorted into semantically related fields。 Words in each field are semantically related 。 There is a popular opinion that that the meaning of a word does not exist in itself, it spreads over the neighboring words, because the neighboring words identify the semantic field and help pin down the meaning。

At present, teachers prefer to use some traditional methods to teach vocabulary。 But these approaches have their own limitations。 For instance, students can't actively and autonomously rack their brains in vocabulary learning, as a result, they fail to have a complete understanding of the words they have learned。 To solve this problem, Brown and Payne have put forward a new model of vocabulary teaching---sense relation strategy including five steps。 The thesis is intended to prove whether this new method is useful to improving vocabulary teaching。
