Abstract：Gone with the wind is the masterpiece and the only work of the famous American woman writer Margaret Mitchell. This thesis attempts to expound the theme of the novel from the angle of ecofeminism. It analyzes the coexistence between women and nature, and intends to explain the novel from three aspects : men’s domination over nature; men’s domination over women; the harmony between women and nature. Gone with the wind bears its valuable social and realistic significances. The world is currently faced with severe environmental crisis. This thesis expresses the relation between human and nature in order to evoke the ecological sense of human beings and realize the harmony between human and nature, human and human.

1. Introduction 

Gone with the Wind won great reputation in world’s literature and it influenced people a lot. The background of this novel is the American Civil War. Margaret Mitchell was in Atlanta in 1900. Her father was a lawyer and a President of the Atlanta historical society. Her mother Mary Isabelle Stephens was a suffragist. Her grandmother was the most radical President of the women’s organizations in Atlanta. As a little girl, she always heard the people around her talked about the war, Margaret married with John Marsh in 1925. The prototype of the heroin was her grandmother, who really experienced the American Civil War and married to the North during the war. Margaret spent about ten years to accomplish this novel, and during this time her husband John Marsh helped her a lot.

This thesis is pided into six parts. The first part is introduction, which introduces the author and the framework. The second part is the theoretical basis and literature review, which introduces the development of ecofeminism as well as scholars’s comments home and abroad. The third part to the fifth part is the body, which analyzes men’s domination over women and nature and the harmony between women and nature. The conclusion part summarizes the research significance of this thesis and points out the deficiency in the thesis. As the world is developing at a tremendous trend, ecofeminism in the western countries, especially in France, Germany, the Netherlands and the United States of the feminist movement and environmental movement were paid more attention by people and has a considerable impact. The status of women in the world’s political leaders is becoming increasingly important, and the research on the harmony between women and nature has become more meaningful. It can make human understand nature better, and awake human’s consciousness of protecting nature.
