Feminism in Emily Dickinson’s Poems
1.Introduction
Emily Dickinson (December 10, 1830-May 15, 1886) is considered as one of the most important female poets in American literary history. Critics believe her contributions to American poetry is as important as Walter Whitman’s. Dickinson left more than 1,775 poems and 1,409 letters in total and all her literary works have been hotly discussed after her death.
Emily Dickinson seldom went out of her home, mostly stayed at home and lived a life of social renunciation and seclusion. She never got married, spent all her life at home, helped running the family household, and aided her ill mother. She seldom walked out of her room, and kept away from the neighbors and friends, except corresponding with her friends and sister-in-law Susan. Emily Dickinson lived her life only according to her own rules rather than the social conventional codes.
Her mysterious life and unique poems attracted a lot of readers. Researchers tried to interpret her poems and thoughts from different angles and perspectives. As a female poet, she also attracted the attention of feminist critics.
Feminist criticism assumes there exists the repression between male and female. And the repression has become a kind of political inclination. Bringing the political inclination to light is the value orientation of feminist criticism.
According to the opinions of Elasne Showalter, feminist critic in America, feminist criticism can be pided into two types. The first type is when women are readers. The second type is when women are writers. In the first type, under the perspective of female readers, critics focus on the issues like patriarchy, feminist consciousness, sex, objectivity existence. In the second type, critics put stress on the writer because she gives the meaning of her text.
Feminist criticism on Emily Dickinson’s poems combines the two types and have great meanings on reality.
2.Literature review
2.1 Studies on Feminist Criticism
Feminist criticism is closely related to feminism. It is literary criticism informed by feminist theory and uses feminist principles and ideology to critique the literature. Feminists try to develop a better understanding of women by analyzing the causes of the subordinate role of women so as to liberate women from spirit enslavement. They believe that culture plays an important role in issues about understanding of women. That is to say, the development of feminist criticism has great effect on women liberation.
Generally, the development of feminist criticism can be pided into three phrases.
During the first phrase,feminist criticism focused on attacking the sexism and exposing the distorting and belittling of women,which played an important role in the development of feminism. A Room of One’s Own written by Virginia Woolf (1929)was regared as one of the most classic works in this phrase. As she said “ a women must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction”, she advocated the independence of the feminine literary in economy and art.
