Abstract
Charles Dickens is a brilliant English novelist as well as a vigorous social campaigner. He is widely recognized as the preeminent novelist of the Victorian age and a major figure in world literature. He is also a humanist. He insists on the great love of human beings. He disagrees with violence,even in a revolution, for many innocent people will be killed at the same time when evil people are punished. His novel A Tale of Two Cities expresses his humanism in details.
The past decades of years have witnessed a sharp change in our society: the fast development of economy, the indifference among people, the widen gap between rich and poor. All those striking similarity to the situation in A Tale of Two Cities makes it a necessary to continue the research of humanism expressed in A Tale of Two Cities. This paper mainly focuses on the humanism of Charles Dickens reflected in A Tale of Two Cities. Humanism, the core concept in this paper, will be illustrated throughout the article by using the method of contrast and the method of argumentation.
This paper falls into five parts. The first part serves as an introduction, including the introduction of Dickens and the background of this novel. The second part aims at pointing the definition of humanism and the typical character of Charles Dickens’ humanism. The third part is about the analysis of those characters in this novel and how humanism showed in them. The forth part probes into the importance of humanism. The fifth part functions as a conclusion.

摘要查尔斯•狄更斯是英国著名的小说家,同时也是为活跃的社会运动者. 他是文多利亚时期著名的小说家,在世界文学史上也占据着举足轻重的地位。他同时也是位人道主义者。他坚持人类大爱。他反对暴力, 即使是在一场革命中,因为革命在惩罚罪人的时候,也会有无辜的人因此丧命。他的《双城记》这本小说详细的解释了他的人道主义。
过去的几十年间,社会发生了很大的变化:经济发展迅速,人与人之间日趋冷漠,贫富差距加大。这些都与《双城记》所在背景特点极为相似,这也使得继续研究《双城记》中人道主义精神成为必要。本文主要讲述了查尔斯•狄更斯在《双城记》中表现出的人道主义思想。人道主义是本文的核心概念,其主要通过对比论证和举例论证来表现。
本篇论文分为五大部分,第一部分是介绍,包括对查尔斯•狄更斯及《双城记》写作背景的介绍。第二部分是介绍人道主义概念及查尔斯•狄更斯的人道主义的特点。第三部分是论述部分,讲述《双城记》是如何体现人道主义的。第四部分是讲人道主义的重要性。第五部分是结论。
