浅析英语语调在口语交际中的功能

Abstract As the basic part of English language, intonation plays an important role in English using. Intonation means the high-low change of tone when we speak, and it is a special feature of language. In the process of verbal communication, people use words and grammatical structures to express meanings. They show the attitudes of speaker and communicative purpose with the help of intonation. This paper mainly discusses the functions of English intonation, which mainly displays its crucial influence in the semantic, grammatical, attitudinal, accentual, textual and discourse aspects concretely. Research shows that English intonation is a way to organize the meaning of words and a significant part to achieve communicative purpose. Different intonation can express different information and discourse meaning, so tone errors can lead to misunderstanding and affect communication. Therefore, this paper aims to enable English learners to have a deeper understanding of the English intonation and effective communication through the description of the basic features and functions of English intonation in detail

I. Introduction
Nowadays, with the popularity of the economic globalization, English has become the official language all over the world. People use English to communicate and make business. Intonation is important for who is speaking, for who will take the next turn, for how the act is to be understood, for how the speaker will be evaluated. If we want to learn English well, intonation is a big project we need to solve. However, because the different areas have different dialects, therefore, the efficiency of using English is not ideal, especially in developing countries. Besides, the most important problem when we speak and use English is intonation, which we can not fully understand and use correctly. During the process of English communication, different speakers may employ different intonation to express their thoughts, attitudes and feelings, etc. Intonation not only conveys messages, but also strengthens the influence of the discourse, so it is of great importance to master the functions of intonation.
