contempt for authority, freedom and equality. Pronunciation, vocabulary and rhetoric of
American slang’s humor will be analyzed as follows.
In the first place, voice humor is one of the most important parts of the humor of American
slang. A great amount of American slang takes advantage of the harmony of sound to reach
the purpose of remembering and understanding easily, reading smoothly and vivid
expressions, such as cop-shop, funny-money, the bee’s knees, fender-bender, razzle-dazzle
and so on. The use of this rhyme makes the people feel the lively rhythm, sweet language,
and help to spread these slang and communicate smoothly.
In the second place, lexical humor reaches the humorous effect by association of ideas.
Much American slang is comprised of initials and acronyms. As is known to all, NATO is
the acronym of North Atlantic Treaty Organization. While innovative and humorous
American people developed it into the other slang with quite different meaning—no action，
talk only. It successfully satirizes the real NATO. And SOS is also explained as “same old
shit”, which implied that audience should walk away from the spot as soon as possible.
What’s more, the use of rhetorical devices reflects the humor of American slang more
clearly, especially the metaphor. For example, if you are a “couch potato”, your life style is
