Abstract The context plays a very important role in both comprehension and application. Different occasions will produce different understandings even with the same expression, which needs the concrete context as a judge. There have been various classifications and definitions about context from abroad as well as at home. However, the thesis will use the concept of context put forward by the famous linguist, Hu Zhuanglin. From the perspective of linguistic context, situational context and cultural context, the thesis will stress the importance of context in translation under the analysis of translation of Pygmalion.46767

翻译中的语境因素——以《卖花女》为例

摘要 语境对语言的理解和运用起着至关重要的作用。相同的表达，在不同的场合下会产生不同的理解，这就需要考虑具体的语境因素来做成正确的判断。关于语境的定义和分类，国内外学者都众说纷纭，本论文采用我国著名语言学家胡壮麟先生对于语境的定义和分类，从语言语境，情景语境和文化语境三大类出发，结合《卖花女》译本中的具体案例进行剖析，以此来证明语境因素在翻译中的作用。

Chapter 1 Introduction

Language activities are carried out with the certain context which is the environment of the activities. Context is so important that it cannot be ignored as it includes time, space, participators, purposes and so on. Not only dose it play an important role in comprehension but also expression. As the famous saying goes: “no context, no text”, context is the basis of language activities. 

1.1 Research Background

    Since Malinowski fist put forward the concept of context, people began to realize the understanding of language was not only confined to language itself, but involved the users of the language and the environment. Then, many linguists did some research and gradually enriched the data of context while analyzing some linguistic problems. Context plays a very important role in language for its functions of comprehension of the original language. It can dispel ambiguous word or word with two or more possible meanings, help to understand the implication, and replenish the meaning of ellipsis. So far, there has been many different definitions and classifications about context. However, some problems still exist. First, the importance of context in translation is not paid well attention. Although the definition is rich ,the practice of translation concerning about context factors is rare. To be more serious, the context factors are usually ignored while translating; second, the definitions and classifications of context are confusing and disordered without an official standard. Owing to standing at different points of view, context has never been studied solely. As a result, there are too many explanations about context.
