1.3 Significance of the study
This paper focuses on the study of Charles Dickens’ antisemitism embodied in Oliver Twist. It represents an analysis of how the description of the character Nancy reflects Dickens’ antisemitism. This paper illustrates the significance of the study from the following aspects:
First, antisemitism attracts more attention in resent years. This paper explores the connection of Dickens’ novel and his antisemitism as many scholars do. I will choose Nancy, a Jewish woman, as the main object of the study. Some other Jews are also referred to.源`自,吹冰`文.论"文'网[www.chuibin.com
Second, there are creativities in this study. It gives a different viewpoint from the minor character Nancy rather than the mostly analyzed character Fagin. Nancy is quite different from Fagin. So it has a different effect on reflecting antisemitism in the novel. Furthermore, a detailed analysis is conducted based on the presentation of Nancy in the novel. The analysis is to reflect the connection between Nancy’s descriptions and antisemitism. This paper also takes the film as a reference and the film helps me to understand characters better. In addition, This paper attaches great importance to the origin of Dickens’ antisemitism. Therefore, a deeper understanding of antisemitism is available.
Finally, the study of antisemitism enriches the studies of Dickens’ works.
1.4 Organization of the study
The study consists of five parts including introduction, literature review, Dickens’ antisemitism, manifestation of Dickens’ antisemitism in Oliver Twist and conclusion.
The first part introduction offers an overview of Dickens and Oliver Twist, the background of the study, significance and organization of the study. The literature review presents the studies of Oliver Twist and antisemitism at home and abroad in resent years, which provides a great number of arguments about Dickens’ antisemitism. And the third part about Dickens’ antisemitism mainly talks about the origin of Dickens’ antisemitism and a change of Dickens’ antisemitism embodied in his works and manifestation of Dickens’ antisemitism in Oliver Twist. This part will involve some other works of Dickens and other Jewish characters. The next part is antisemitism and Nancy. This part focuses on the character Nancy. It is the main body of the study. The connection of antisemitism and Nancy will be studied. And the last part is the conclusion of the study.
