However, very few people analyzed archetypes in Jane Eyre. The novel always refers to some sentences in the Bible, and we can find the influence of religion on the author in this novel. Owing to the religious influence in her childhood life, in Jane Eyre Bronte quotes the Bible in various aspects, and adopts the Christian narrative mode. This phenomenon is common in literary creation. According to Freud's view, we can not forget the childhood memories. Charlotte Bronte was brought up in a religious family. Her father was a pastor, a devout Christian, with a large number of religious books at home, and most time of her life she took part in religious activities. Her mother was inextricably linked with Wesley Methodist. The family was taken care of by her mother’s sister when her mother died. Her aunt was not Calvin Christian, but had a frantic religious worship in Wesley. Therefore, for Charlotte Bronte, “religion is the only accessible choice to her life, religion is the center of her attention, and religion is also a way of making a living”. Her early enlightenment education was completely interwined with religion, the Bible and Christianity. In this novel, we can see the author in the heroine Jane Eyre. The author's life experience is similar to that of Jane Eyre.

The archetypal criticism began in the early twentieth Century. The Swiss psychologist Carl Jung (Jung) combines myths and archetypes in the psychological level and is considered as the founder of myth-archetypal criticism. Carl Jung puts forward the “collective unconscious”, and considers “the collective unconscious is mainly composed of archetype components”. He also believes that “any works’ archetype can be found in ancient myths and legends”, “collective consciousness directly affect the successful works”. Myth-archetypal criticism believes that, “the special relationship of works and the myth is reflected in the 'myth' of literary creation. 'Myth' model refers to the creation of literary works by existing myth framework. The characters, plot, structure generally correspond to myth, and forming the symbol of wholeness." Frye believes some common natural phenomena such as seas, forests in literary works appear again and again, so it cannot be considered to be “coincidence”. Frye believes that literature is a myth.

Both at home and abroad, many scholars have used this method to analyze Jane Eyre. Critics have discussed several archetypal images in the novel, such as the moon, fire, and they also try to find archetypes of characters. Qu Linlin once discussed the archetypes of the characters such as Jane Eyre, Helen, St. John's, Mason siblings. And some critics have discussed the role of God in the novel. Wang Wenyu discussed the perfect "God" image of Jane Eyre. In fact, we can easily find archetypes of the plot development and characters in the Bible or mythology. In this paper, I will make use of archetypal criticism theory to analyze Jane Eyre and argue that it embodies the death and rebirth archetypal themes in the Bible.

Chapter Two  Death

Jane Eyre is a work of romanticism which pursues independence, freedom, and spiritual love. It has focused on the theme of death and rebirth and embodied the process of human’s loss and return of paradise.

2.1 Paradise lost---Thornfield

When Jane Eyre comes to Thornfield Hall at first, Thornfield is a gentleman’s grand house. However, when Jane Eyre comes to Thornfield again later, she expects to see a wonderful house. On the contrary to what she expected, a pile of ruin lies there to meet her. “The lawn and yard are all overrided and damaged, and the gate is damaged. There is nothing but ruins. The rest part is only a broken wall as shells. The wall seemed tall and thin, and some no glass-windows are opening above it, no roofs, no crenellation, and no chimneys, it all collapsed.” The prosperity of the past has become the desolation of today, all of which is attributed to Rochester’s mad wife, Bertha Mason. In Jane Eyre, the protagonists Jane and Rochester are like Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden who love each other very much .When they are going to get married, Mason’s brother appears and he tells an shocking secret that his sister, Bertha Mason is still live. When Jane learns the truth, she chooses to escape from Thornfield Hall and leave her beloved. Rochester is punished by God, because he conceals the truth that his wife is still live. Then his mad wife sets a fire to make Thornfield Hall become ashes, and make Mr. Rochester become disabled. Jane and Rochester’s love tragedy presents a typical archetypal plot of human’s loss of paradise. Because of some mistakes, Jane has to leave Thornfield---the Garden of Eden. Eden is a wonderful place in the Bible and is full of endless love and happiness. Everyone is looking forward to being a part of the Garden of Eden, but the pleasant days are always so short, because there are temptations and taboos. The Thornfield Hall without Jane and Rochester is a ruin, just like the Garden of Eden without Adam and Eve.文献综述
