2。1 Text Characteristic in English Speech

     One of the features of public speaking is the publicity。 The addresser should deliver a speech to thousands of even millions of people。 The president's political speech is more than propaganda。 It should be real,distinct and active。 The President need to clarify what his achievement is, what his position is, and what he will do to solve the problems。 All this should be true, so the public will support him。 Not only a profound political mind, but also the high sense of responsibility is the need for the president。 One of the goals of making a speech is to stimulate citizens especially in his inaugural address。文献综述

     In Barack Obama's inauguration speech, he used all kinds of sentence patterns and rhetoric devices, which makes his speech more vivid。 Figures of speech can be pided into lexical stylistic devices, syntactical stylistic devices and phonetic stylistic devices。 (Lü 125) What can be noticed about the characters in Mr Obama's inauguration speech is that he preferred to use syntactical stylistic devices, especially the parallelism and contrast。 The second characteristic is he is good at combining two kinds of rhetoric devices in one sentence。 The combination of different rhetoric devices can strengthen the maximum power。

2。2 Rhetoric in English Political Speech

     Speech is very important in human social activity。 Political address means that a political leader give public speech, and his or her own view as the instruction in some political issues。 Inaugural speech of the President of the United States is testimonial, and plans to his will in the next four years after the election。 It can reveal the president's personal attitude, and provide us with high appreciation value。 Political speech is related with rhetoric。 According to the classical rhetoric theory system, rhetoric is a kind of skill which is to study address。 In ancient Greece rhetoric theory refers to the art of speaking。 Political speech must be strong and provocative in order to get more support from the public and to persuade the public to do he wants them to do。 Therefore, the speaker always uses rhetoric in the speech。 Studying rhetoric’s goal is to have our words more effective。 There are three different kinds of rhetoric: lexical stylistic devices, syntactical stylistic devices and phonetic stylistic devices。 Or more accurately, lexical stylistic devices are made up out of simile, metaphor, allusion, metonymy, transferred epithet,来*自~优|尔^论:文+网www.chuibin.com +QQ752018766* personification, hyperbole, irony, euphemism, pun, oxymoron, zeugma etc。 Syntactical stylistic devices include parallelism, allusion, irony, antithesis, repetition, climax, anticlimax, analogy, anastrophy, paradox etc。 Phonetic stylistic devices consist of alliteration, assonance, consonance, rhyme, onomatopoeia。
