A Comparative Analysis of the Reported Speech in Chinese & English News Reports on China’s V-Day Parade in 2015

Abstract On the basis of Critical Discourse Analysis, this thesis selects 24 pieces of news reports about China’s V-day parade in 2015 from the USA, the UK and Chinese newspapers as a corpus and makes a comparative analysis of the Reported Speech in the news reports。 Specifically, the study focuses on the reporting modes, reporting verbs and news sources of the reported speech with the aim to analyze how reporters effectively convey and persuade readers to accept their views, and reveal the ideologies behind the news discourses。76637

This thesis reveals that reporters from American, Britain and China news reports are all inclined to use direct speech, neutral reporting verbs and specified sources so as to increase the objectivity of the reports。 However, more negative reporting verbs are used in American and British news reports, while more positive reporting verbs are preferred by Chinese news reports。 Unmentioned sources are employed by American newspapers and unspecified sources by British newspapers to deliver the reporter’s disagreement of China’s peaceful development sayings about the military parade。 The results show that America and Britain are dreadful of the advancement of China, especially China’s military power。

中外报刊关于“2015年中国抗战胜利日阅兵”新闻报道中的转述话语对比分析

摘  要本文选取中外报纸中24篇关于“中国纪念世界反法西斯战争胜利70周年阅兵式”的英文新闻为语料,采用批评话语分析的研究方法,对中、美、英三国报纸中新闻报道的转述方式,转述动词和新闻来源进行对比分析,探讨报道者如何有效传递和说服读者接受其对事件的观点,并揭示新闻话语中隐藏的社会意识形态。

研究发现,中美英报纸在转述话语时都大量采用直接引语、中性转述动词和明确的消息来源,以便提高新闻的客观性。但英美报纸的报道负面动词使用偏多,而中国的报道正面动词偏多。美国报纸报道中的转述言语倾向于不提及消息来源,英国报纸使用更多的含蓄不定的消息来源来表达对“中国阅兵仪式是为了和平发展”这一观点的不赞同。从研究结果可以看出,美英两国对中国有所忌惮,在军事力量方面尤为明显。
