II. Describe of English Movie Title
2.1 The Functions of English Movie Titles
Function is a topic largely discussed by the translation scholars. Vermeer defines action as what a text means or is intended to mean from the receiver's point of view. (Nord 1:28). Each text is produced for a certain function. The station of a text should also be intended to function for the target receivers. Functionalism draws on Karl Biihler's organon (1934) about the text function. Biihler proposed that there were three basic text functions: referential, expressive and appellative functions. And because the film is a material product as well as a spiritual product, this dual decides that film titles have both functions of artistic appreciation and commercial advertisement, therefore the titles should bear the aesthetic function as well.
2.1.1 Informative Function
According to Newmark ,the informative function of language is featured with the external situation as its core. By saying external situation, Peter Newmark means the facts of a topic, reality and outside language, including reported ideas or theories (Newmark 2001). The informative function of movie title is reflected by helping the audience to know about some fcts and relevant information about the movie. Information many include: movie genre, events referred in the movie and the main plot of the movie.
