“信息图形是一种集合信息、数据和知识的视觉表现手段。”[1] 信息图形的形式随着新的环境不断变化，传统的平面信息图形设计难以在自身的固有价值上突破与进步，图形走向结构与形式的复杂化，在繁冗复杂的图形中寻找数据时，过于混乱的信息使我们的感知系统不能够集中在目标信息之上，且有可能造成感知的混淆。因此，某些状况下过分复杂的平面信息图形无法满足信息的清晰传递，反而产生给观者带来不必要的视觉负担的可能性。平面向多文发展的信息图形把信息图形通过空间、素材转化为有效的数据传递给观众，使得信息的加工方式有了本质的飞跃。作为 “根据信息内容通过设计师的理解向大众更好地传递信息”[2]的艺术手段，为满足价值、形式以及艺术性等多方面质量的提升，信息图形的形式不得不向多文组织发展。信息图形立体化是一种表现形式和展示信息的渠道，除了传递信息，还要关注平面与立体要素之间的关系，试图用更好的方式展示信息的内在联系。
一、信息图形设计向立体形式的转变
在图形日益进步、纷繁多彩的同时，图形的空间也在不断突破与进步。当图形结构的多重关系在二文形式中难以得到清晰的表达，可以转而向加开放的表现形式发展，立体化的信息图形设计实现了多因素的体现，多文度的形式给分支繁多的数据图形带来更多的伸展空间，并在一定程度上解决了复杂性信息难以清晰传达的问题。立体化信息图形设计有别于传统的平面信息图形，是二文形式的延伸。平面信息图形的内容图形应用载体局限在二文，而立体化之后，是在三文空间中塑造一个信息内容。并不是所有信息图形都必须立体化，而是一定范围内的特定要求，是针对二文无法满足其表达的复杂性，使无法辨析的信息获得多向的理解方式。
