随着绘画多样性的出现，肌理在油画中扮演着越来越重要的角色。作为油画语言之一肌理，也在潜移默化的演变着。它是画家情感的表现手段，是物质与精神相互交融的产物。所以，在当今艺术的大熔炉里，各种学科相互渗透影响下，画家们的观念和观众们的眼光都在不断地更新着，所以不断探索属于自己的艺术风格成为画家们的终身追求。
一、油画肌理的表现形式
油画肌理的发展经历了一个长期的过程，在早期的油画创作中，肌理几乎没有得明显的发展。直到16世纪后期，在油画布代替木板之后，肌理才得到一定发展并且再17世纪以后，油画肌理成为了表现的重要手段之一。油画肌理一般分为隐性肌理和显性肌理，从油画肌理的外在特征来说。隐性肌理，一般是不被肉眼直接观察出来的肌理效果，它需要借助一定的媒介才能够看到，在古典油画中比较常见。例如在早期的油画技法中，画家们主要以反映自然科学为主，真实再现客观事物。所以在画面中尽量的隐去肌理显现出的痕迹，使画面更加的光滑、细腻、逼真。其中扬•凡•埃克的代表作品《阿尔诺芬尼夫妇像》，这幅作品就能够体现出画家精湛细微的技法，特别是对毛发的绘制和木板纹理的处理，都能够体现出画家精益求精的精神，画面平整而光滑，同样肌理是几乎看不出来的。但是随着社会的发展，人们对改进油画技法的迫切需要，直接画法的得到了运用同时也带动了油画的显性肌理的发展。显性的肌理是指画面直接显现出来，画面表面凹凸不平、起伏明显的，能够直接从视觉上分辨出来的肌理效果。在扬•凡•埃克改进油画材料之后，而提香则是真正的理解油画的属性，在带有纹理的画布上创作不仅使画面产生了独特的明显的肌理效果和节奏感，在创作中还是用堆厚笔触的做法与薄的地方进行对比，从而使笔触和肌理的结合成为了可能。尤其是通过画布代替木板，不仅扩大了画面的尺寸，也增强了笔刷的表现力，为显性肌理作为主要的表现要素奠定了基础。直到现代显性肌理才得到了充分表现与运用。
