The misconception that additional torsional reinforcement is required for a rigid pile cap is discussed and rectified. Like the flexible pile cap, the shear stress is “torsion-induced” in nature for the rigid pile cap with the cap rigidity increased by increasing the Young’s modulus. For the rigid cap with the cap rigidity increased by increasing the cap depth, which is the commonly regarded type of rigid cap, the shear stress is “bending-induced” in nature, with reference to a beam subjected to a concentrated load in the middle. Since the stirrups in a routine reinforced concrete design are sufficient to resist the bending-induced shear stress, no additional reinforcement is required to resist the “torsion-induced” shear stress, which does not theoretically exist according to the assumption of a rigid cap.
