Abstract Tennessee Williams is reputed as one of the greatest playwrights after Second World War。 His plays are unique for their concern about female issues。 This thesis is attempted to analyze the tragedy of two female characters from feminist perspective。 Amanda indulges herself in the glorious past, while Laura hides herself in her glass world。 They gradually realize that women cannot depend on men to achieve happiness after a lot of pains and frustration。 The significance of this thesis is reflected in its application of feminist theory and the revelation of the theme that the only way for women to obtain real happiness is to get rid of the dependence on man。86416

Tragedy of Female Characters’ in The Glass Menagerie—From the Perspective of Feminism

Ⅰ。 Introduction

Unlike other literary genres, such as American fiction and poetry, which have played important roles in the world literature since eighteen century, the original American literature hasn’t come into being until the early period of the twentieth century。 From the end of the World WarⅠto the first decade of the twentieth century, American drama came to its golden age which witnesses its increasing influence。 From 1920 to 1960, dramatic artists of international fame “in a concentration never seen before and never experienced since” (Adler, 1994) sprung up in America。 A lot of outstanding playwrights including Eugene O’Neill, Arthur Miller, and Tennessee Williams sprung up in this period。 Some literary critics think that Williams is inferior to Eugene O’Neill in some degree。 However, Bloom believes that of all the dramatists Williams is not only the most prolific but also the most successful and the most literary。 (1987)
