Abstract
The novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin described different performance and disposition of black slaves, and it had an important political influence on history and inspired the oppressed people to struggle for freedom. This paper adopts the method of textual analysis. Firstly, it simply introduces the author and the main content of the novel; then, it analyzes the two main characters in Uncle Tom’s Cabin, Uncle Tom’s obedience and Eliza’a struggle for freedom, then by contrasting their different fates, the paper concludes that if the slaves wanted to get freedom and live their own lives, they had to struggle for themselves, instead of sitting for death. God helps those who help themselves. This spirit is encouraging and inspiring those troubled people in our life to go out for what they want on their own selves.

I. Introduction
Harriet Beecher Stowe, one of the most outstanding American female writers in the 19th, wrote Uncle Tom’s Cabin which was so succeed that it was soon translated into different versions. And many experts have studied this topic from various aspects, for example, in 1977 Elizabeth Ammons analyzed the characters of heroines in Uncle Tom’s Cabin, the book’s emotional portrayal of the impact of slavery captured the nation attention. The heroines’ spirits of resistance in the book had a significant impact on the American Civil War. It added to the debate about the abolition of slavery, and aroused opposition in the south. And it also greatly enlightened the people in need.
This paper will firstly describe and contrast the two kinds of characters in the novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Almost every slave wanted their own freedom; however, Tom gave up any chances of being a free man. When people asked him why he did not escape, his answer was that “master trusted me, and I couldn’t”. No matter what his masters did with him or how they arranged him, he would grin and bear. In the contrast, on hearing Mr. and Mrs. Shelby talking about selling her little Harry secretly, Eliza decided to take Harry away by herself. Though her hostess educated her and treated her very well, though she was soft and mild, in order not to break up with her only child, she escaped. In the end, the Elizas’ gained their freedom, but poor Uncle Tom died. These two characters lead to different fates.
