Xu Zhimo, a biographical masterpiece edited by professor Han Shishan(2007:3-36), introduces Xu’s life carefully and roundly. Xu was born in a traditional family with a firm faith of Ch’an. At his first age, a Buddhist monk named Zhi Hui touched his head and predicted a bright future of him. Later, Xu changed his name to “Zhimo” before
studying overseas. Enjoyably, in Chinese, “mo” means touching. The second part of this book introduced his study abroad both in America and Europe during which two contradiction aroused and caught our attention. First, Xu could not fit well with the traditional family life after receiving advanced western education, especially his marriage upon arbitrary decision by two families who both want to broaden their social influence through this marriage. Second, his pure literature dream characterized by writing for beauty instead of praising the revolution was hard to materialize under harsh political situation and moral limits.
Based on Xu Zhimo’s complicated living experiences, we believe that there is more to study than literature analysis only, such as the topic of this paper--reflection of Ch’an in Farewell to Cambridge Again. This paper, somehow, expect not only to broaden its study area and value of Farewell to Cambridge Again but also fill in current research blank through this paper.
This paper focus on the exploration of Ch’an in a literature work and it relies mainly on two parts: collection and analysis of related information.
