1  Introduction

1。1 Research Background

Countryside literature, as an important genre in the Chinese contemporary literature, bears the weight of local history and palimnesis of humanistic feelings with its unique speech patterns and narrative structure, in which the most particular expression is slang。 The countryside literature, like any other type of literature, comes from the real life and is rooted in the real life, which plays a significant role because it is able to arouse people’s sympathy for those who stay as the grass-root class and live a poor life。 There exist huge and obvious differences between the earlier stage and the later one of Yu Hua’s writing period。 He preferred to create novels with more realistic depiction during the later period, among which To Live is a representative。 In To Live, a typical example of Chinese countryside literature, slang is widely used。 Hong Zhiqiang claimed that Yu Hua strictly established the tenor of discourse on the background of a farmer’s life (Hong, 2000)。 With the wide use of slang in this novel, the earthy and unique features of countryside areas have been exhibited vividly to readers, making it an ideal sample to study the slang translation in countryside literature。

The novel To Live forms the structure with painful life of a farmer, Fu Gui, who spent his whole life at the bottom of the society。 Yu Hua vividly describes the picture of the rural life , which is full of rural flavor and earth’s fragrance。 From+优|尔-论_文W网wWw.YouErw.com 加QQ752018.766

Yu’s realistic depiction objectively takes readers back to that miserable time and veritably let them experience the tortuous life, full of vicissitudes and hardship (Gao, 2012)。 Professor Huang Weilin once said, “Fu Gui is an ordinary person who only received several years’ education in the old-style private school and continued his rest life as a farmer。 It is a must to tell story with the simplest words through his own narration (Huang, 2007, p。 73)。”  Therefore, this novel is a quite typical literature novel that carries vivid Chinese local culture and features。

1。2 Research Objective

It is hoped that through this study, slang translation in the English version of To Live can be analyzed in details according to the Translation Variation Theory。 We can classify those slang into different groups according to various translation strategies。 With the comparison between the original version of slang and their translations in To Live, some successful translation strategies are recommended and some problems of slang translation in Chinese countryside literature are summarized。 The paper aims to shed light on the preservation of Chinese countryside literature in order to bring Chinese local literature to the international stage and to popularize Chinese culture。 论文网
