Abstract
The thesis is based on the mother-daughter conflicts between four mothers and daughters in Amy Tan’s novel-The Joy Luck Club. It mainly studies on the conflicts to expose the cultural conflicts behind them and analyze the causes for these conflicts. The analysis on the causes aims at helping people understand the conflicts between mother and daughter who live in different environment are closely related to their different cultural environments. This paper includes four parts. The first part introduces the author and her works and the reason why she writes the book. The second part describes the mother-daughter conflicts. The third part gives the causes of the mother-daughter conflicts mainly from culture. The fourth part is the conclusion of the paper which is mainly about the meaning of the study of the mother-daughter conflicts and other related studies.

The Study of Mother-Daughter Conflicts in The Joy Luck Club
I. Introduction
Amy Tan, born in Oakland, California, is one of the most famous Chinese American writers. Her Chinese immigrant parents’ experience had provided her with a sea of inspiration and writing materials for her works. Amy Tan personally experienced a complicated relationship between her and her mother as a second generation of immigrants, which makes it easy for her to describe the plots of the relationship between Chinese immigrant mother and the American-born daughter under the cross-cultural background. After the unexpected success of The Joy Luck Club, Tan published several other bestselling novels, including The Kitchen God’s Wife, The Hundred Secret Senses, and The Bonesetter’s Daughter. Her first work of non-fiction, The Opposite of Fate, was published in 2003. Tan is also the author of two children’s books, The Moon Lady and The Chinese Siamese Cat. Her essay “Mother Tongue” has been widely anthologized. Tan’s most recent novel is Saving Fish from Drowning.
