Thus, this thesis is intended to study the motivation of network chatting English neologisms, or netspeak English neologisms, in a narrow sense so that some enlightenment can be acquired in the aspect of understanding, learning and employing netspeak English neologism as well as its developing tendency and law. The netspeak English neologisms are referred to the expressions and symbols used in Internet chat rooms, which are classified according to different kinds of word formation after plenty of samples about online chatting records are collected as research resources. After a brief introduction of motivation, the analysis of motivation is carried out respectively for different netspeak English neologisms with different kinds of word formation.
1.2 Research Purpose and Significance
This thesis aims to help English learners develop a comprehensive appreciation for the endlessly emerging netspeak English neologisms. It is also written to provide aids for English learners to comprehend and figure out how a new word comes into existence in the Internet world. The analysis of the motivation of English neologisms as online chatting language can help explain and interpret the source, origin of these new words and the connection of the word form and its notion. Then, the developing law and trend of netspeak English neologisms can be figured out, which can help people better understand and grasp these words as return. At the same time, various aspects of the social life can be reflected through the analysis of these words.
1.3 Structure of the Thesis
This thesis is presented in four chapters in all.
In the first chapter, the research backgrounds, purpose and significance as well as the structure of this thesis are introduced briefly.
The second chapter focuses on the research review and the theoretical framework of the thesis as well as the research method and material collection. Several significant relative theories and key notions, terms and definitions are elaborated in this chapter, such as motivation, netspeak English and so on.
The motivation of narrow netspeak English neologisms is analyzed in the third chapter. At first, narrow netspeak English neologisms are pided into several types in terms of the word formation from the angles of four kinds of motivation, trying to figure out the rule of the netspeak English neologisms.
The forth chapter is the conclusive part. The major findings are summarized, the result of the study, the value and limitation of the study are displayed, the enlightenment of the analysis is explained and the future of netspeak English is predicted briefly.
