A Comparison Between Amelia and Rebecca in Vanity Fair from the Perspective of Feminism

Abstract Vanity Fair, the masterpiece of William Makepeace Thackeray, an English critical realistic writer, vividly describes two different female characters, Amelia Sedley and Rebecca Sharp。 It can be seen from the different attitudes towards family and love of two female characters that the position and role of women in Victorian era, and the embryo of feminism。

This thesis develops in the following four parts: Firstly the thesis gives a brief introduction of Vanity Fair and some literature review。

The first chapter mainly analyzes women’s images in Victorian era and Amelia and Rebecca’s sense of feminine independence。

The second chapter mainly analyzes the image of Amelia, an obedient and weak women who doesn’t have self-consciousness and her life is controlled by men。

The third chapter analyzes the image of Rebecca, an adventuress。 She has her own desire and tries to get rid of the male-dominated society。

Finally comes to the conclusion。 According to the analysis of two female characters from their different attitudes towards money and family, it can be seen that Amelia is a typical Victorian woman lacks of self-consciousness。 Though Rebecca has to rely on men to achieve her “upper class dream”, her self-consciousness should be praised, which is the embryo of feminism。 And Feminism in Victorian era still has long way to go。88154
