1。 Introduction

1。1 Background and Objectives

The Catcher in the Rye is a famous story by American author Jerome David Salinger(1919-2010)。 Jerome David Salinger is one of the most significant post-World War II Amercian novelists。 In 1951 Salinger released his novel The Catcher in the Rye, an immediate popular success。 It was published when America just won the Second World War and then became an economic and military power in the world。 However, people at that time ignored personality development and other's feeling but only focused on creating wealth。 In addition, this novel is regarded as one of the most popular modern classics in American literature, and the protagonist of the novel, Holden Caulfield, is also one of the most famous characters in American literary history。 Besides, the main character of The Catcher in the Rye, Holden, whose influence is so profound that can be found nearly in every aspects of American mass culture, even today。 Beyond all doubts, J。 D。 Salinger has successfully created vivid and realistic image of Holden。 Holden, who is one of the earliest anti-hero appearing in contemporary American literature, represents the spiritual states of the young Americans in 1950s。

文献综述xfyThis novel is a story about failure and escape。 A sixteen years old middle-school student, Holden, is dismissed by Pencey School for the fourth time。 On account of many reasons, Holden chooses to be a tramp。 He is also considering whether he should simply go out west and start a new life, rather than go home at all。 The three days' vagrant life vividly reflects his experiences and feelings。 It manifests the American young people's depressed and indecisive psychology。 Holden is so weak, fragile, sensitive, and he is full of suspicion and mistrust to the world。 He dreams of being a catcher in the rye, literally catching children as they fall off a cliff that is a symbol for childhood。 论文网

The objectives of this thesis are to examine the marginal characteristics of Holden Caulfield in the The Catcher in the Rye。 This thesis includes six chapters。 In the first chapter, the introduction explains the study’s background, objectives, significance and research methods。 In the second chapter, I provide the theoretic framework and literature review about previous researches of this novel, especially in the marginality aspect。 In the next three chapters, I try to analyze the marginal characteristics of Holden mainly from those three parts: cowardliness and passiveness, isolation from society and language characteristics。 The causes of those performances are also taken into consideration。 In the final chapter, the conclusion wraps the thesis up, reemphasizes the main ideas, and points out the deficiencies。 Last but not least, this study considers language characteristics with regard to the research perspective of the novel。
