On the whole, the greatness of The Old Man and the Sea is on account of different elements such as its well-organized structure, special language features, iceberg style and symbolism. What’s more, the most importance of this novel is successful creation of the characteristics of Santiago. Especially, it is not only the Lost Generation, but also the modern people who are affected deeply by Santiago’s confidence and endurance. Hemingway creates a heroic man－Santiago for the Lost Generation who feels disappointed about the fate of the world and the society. Santiago’s tough experience and undefeated spirit also encourage modern people to go ahead.
To sum up, this paper applies inpidual image to interpret the heroism through analyzing the main character’s thinking modes, showing us that the strong heroism and courage. The Heroism has always been regarded as a powerful force illustrating human beings’ transcendental pursuit for perfection. Yet this heroic reading is based on the persistence of the old fisher- man. This paper attempts to indicate the heroism from the inpidual point of the view by analyzing the main character’s personalities and thinking modes in order to gain some new understanding of the literature. Most importantly, this thesis will analyze the image of the old man, reveal the characteristics of the super heroism, and advocate the spirit of never giving up. Although the old man in this novel is weak and in the grim fate of pressure, he also shows the spirit of heroism.
