Title  The Confusion of Female Slaves’ Finding Self from Sethe’s Infanticide
Abstract
The American black woman writer Toni Morrison describes a story where Sethe, a female negro, lives with her dead daughter’s soul after 18 years when her daughter was killed by Sethe. This paper first briefly introduces the social background of slavery. It analyzes one of the main characters—Sethe’s views and feelings on infanticide based on “self” theories in psychology according to her fragmentary memories and words on baby killing, including her certainty, doubt, confusion and so on, which can also explain Sethe’s perverted mind. Combined with the relationship between Sethe and surroundings and negroes’ own contradiction of culture, this paper proves Sethe feels confused and helpless in the road of finding self as a female negro.

1 Introduction
Blacks or blacks’ life is a common theme in the area of literature. Black slaves are a special group of the black, and they are always maliciously called “negro” by slave owners. “Negro” is a synonym of “black slave” or “black ghost”. During the period of slavery, negroes suffer a lot, not only in body but also in mind. Many scholars have done researches on negroes’ life. They mainly analyze how and why negroes, as a group, are treated as animals without any freedom.
Toni Morrison, the writer of Beloved, is an American novelist, editor, and professor. Her novels are known for their epic themes, vivid dialogue, richly detailed characters and lively imagination. Her works are mainly about the lives of American negroes, including The Bluest Eye, Song of Solomon, Sula, Tar Baby and so on. Looking for “self” is one of the most important themes of Toni Morrison’s novels.
