Title： English Lyrics Translation under the Guidance of Functional Equivalence ---- Bob Dylan as A Case in Point
Abstract：As an important theory the Functional Equivalence theory takes a great position and has been widely used in English translation. This paper first introduces the stylistic features of lyrics, the Functional Equivalence theory, Bob Dylan’s life experience and his skillful use of plain words that readers can easily accept and get the meaning. Then the article, with careful reflection, chooses three representative lyrics to analyze the translation skill under the guidance of Functional Equivalence theory, so as to reveal what is to be taken care of throughout translation process. Finally the article concludes the major findings of the study and gives some suggestions for further studies.

1 . Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Nowadays, with the development of internet people can easily touch and learn the foreign culture . More and more foreign cultural audio- and visual products not only enrich people’s spare time but also extend their cultural experience. Music is popular with all age levels and classes and more and more people study English by listening to English songs，or watch English movies and so on (Xie Jingrong,2008). However, not everyone is good at English and sometimes people cannot totally understand the meaning of the lyrics. Even they know English well, they may not translate English lyrics well (Wang Xuefei,2013). So we need to help those people to well enjoy foreign cultures by finding a way to translate English lyrics. The difficulties of lyrics translation lie in phonological, lexical and syntactic differences between languages, so different translators give different translation versions, based on their own understanding of a song. It is thus necessary to distinguish and choice a better one (Xiao Junshi,1982).
1.2 Purpose of the Study
This paper means to give a brief introduction to the functional equivalence theory, together with rich examples of translation research. It then attempts to introduce English lyrics translation skills and compare different translation versions under the guidance of functional equivalence theory. Bob Dylan’s life experience and his lyrics are analyzed in detail, with the intention to indicate that good pop songs play an important role in enriching Chinese people’s horizon of English cultures. Last but not least, lyrics translation research casts light on the application range of Functional Equivalence theory.
