1.2 Significance of Study
This paper aims to research the classifications of English suffixes, including subjective suffixes and objective suffixes. Word formation is an important way to learn English vocabulary, it helps students to remember a large number of words and guess words’ meaning in dong reading comprehension, transform derivational words quickly, what’s more, it enlarges students’ vocabulary(Teng Xiping 2007). Therefore, the research on English suffixes of subjectivity and objectivity is meaningful and would be beneficial for English learners to memory more English words easily and effectively.
2. Literature Review
2.1 Previous Studies on English Suffixes
2.1.1 Definition & Classification of Affixes
English is a language, which lay great emphasis on word structure. And there is one science studying the changes and rules of word structure—Morphology, which mainly study word formation.Word formation including compounding, shortening, cutting, abbreviation, inversion, affixation, etc. In the past 20 years, the research on word-formation covered a wide as well as specified field, including the branch of EST(English for science and technology), law English, news English, business English, net speak and so on, and one important research is on the study of affixation(Du Lifang 2011). so among all these approaches, affixation is used more frequently and widely in modern English.
