Abstract
"The Great Gatsby" is a novella that written by American writer, Scott Fitzgerald in 1925, taking the New York City and Long Island in the 1920 s as the background. The background of the novel is set in the white circles of the modern upper middle class in American society, through the narrative from Carraway. "The Great Gatsby", laid the position for Christopher Scott Fitzgerald in the history of modern American literature. He became the spokesman of “Jazz Age” in the 20s and one of the representative writers of the “Lost Generation”. At the end of the 20th century, the American academic authority selected the best one hundred novels in the English literature history, and "The Great Gatsby" ranked second in the list, thus becoming a contemporary classic novel.
This paper draws up to parse the inevitability of tragedy from the book “The Great Gatsby” from the angle of the reliability of the pedestal of dream. It is to prove the central idea that only if the cornerstone of the dream is stable in reality, can the dream be expected to come true in the end. This paper is pided into five parts. The first part is to talk about the author, Scott Fitzgerald's life and the general introduction of the background and content of the novel. The second part expounds the definition of dream and talk about the connotation of Gatsby's dream. The third part mainly uses comparative method to analyze the reasons of the similar tragedies of the two protagonists in the novel the Great Gatsby and the death of a salesman. In order to demonstrate the conclusion that unstable pedestal of their dream leads to the failure of Gatsby and Willy. The fourth part contacts the reality, sum up the lesson and enlightenment from Gatsby and Willy’s tragedies. To show the main idea that people need to seek the possibility of realizing their dreams when they pursue them in today's society. The fifth part is the summary of the full text.

摘要《了不起的盖茨比》是美国作家弗•司各特•菲茨杰拉德1925年所写的一部以20世纪20年代的纽约市及长岛为背景的中篇小说。小说的背景被设定在现代化的美国社会中上阶层的白人圈内,通过卡拉韦的叙述展开。《了不起的盖茨比》的问世,奠定了弗•司各特•菲茨杰拉德在现代美国文学史上的地位,使他成为了20年代“爵士时代”的发言人和“迷惘的一代”的代表作家之一。20世纪末,美国学术界权威在百年英语文学长河中选出了一百部最优秀的小说,《了不起的盖茨比》高居第二位,傲然跻身当代经典行列。
