Title A Pragmatic Study of Inter-sentential code switching between Chineseand English in Chinese Microblogs
Abstract Microblogs are prevalent in modern society for their various functions ，such as sharing,feelings, mastering news，or knowing things happening all over the world and so forth. Theinter-sentential code switching between Chinese and English has been widely used in ChineseMicroblogs when microblog users send and sharing messages on internet. Based on the mostcommon and typical, the present study has been conducted to analyze the causes and pragmaticfunctions of inter-sentential code switching in Chinese Microblogs under the framework ofLinguistic Adaptation Theory.

1 IntroductionFor the sake of clarification, social linguists introduced the word code to refer to languages orthe branches of languages. Code is a neutral term, different from dialects and standard languageswhich are preoccupied by certain affection (Auer Peter, 1998). We can define inter-sentential codeswitching with the information above. Inter-sentential code switching always happens between twoor more sentences. Also, it can be referred to the exchange of two distinct variants, Chinese andEnglish, within a paragraph or within a passage. Most people master all the variants of their ownlanguages. But when they start to talk, they have to choose only one kind of variant or change fromone variant to another.Since 1970s, specialists have done a number of researches on the phenomenon of codeswitching. Despite a rather late start, scholars and researchers in China have made greatachievements by adopting unique study methods. This paper will mainly analyze the inter-sententialcode switching between Chinese and English from the perspective of linguistic adaptation theory. Itaims to achieve following goals: 1. Explain the causes and pragmatic functions of inter-sententialcode switching in Chinese Microblogs; 2. Enable people to use inter-sentential code switching morerationally; 3. Inspire deep thoughts in scholars of the standard and the development of languages. 2 Literature ReviewAfter collecting and analyzing results of early studies, the main fields of code switching couldbe summarized as follows: the sociolinguistic studies of code switching, psychological linguisticsstudies of code switching, and pragmatics studies of code switching.2.1 The Sociolinguistic Studies of Code SwitchingThe sociolinguistic study of code switching discusses social motivation behind the codeswitching via exploring the relationship between social factors and code switching on a macro level(Auer, 1998： 403-410). The central point of the study is how the usage of language can reflect equalrights and social inequality. In other words, the study focuses on how language can become apointer to the civil right and civil duties of a certain social class.2.2 Psychological Linguistic Studies of Code SwitchingThe basic task of the psychological linguistics study of code switching is to understandbilinguals’ condition of mind when they conduct obvious code switching behaviors (Wang ，2006).According to psychological linguistic researches, we could analyze the psychological statusof language users behind code switching, thus making it easier to know these users’ aims andreasons to adopt code switching in their utterances.2.3 Pragmatic Studies of Code SwitchingAccording to the pragmatics studies of code switching, the studies of code switching can beclassified into three types: 1) exploring the pragmatic functions of code switching; 2) exploring thereasons of code switching; 3) exploring the mode of code switching.
