Title The study of suspense in The Da Vinci Code
Abstract
Suspense is an important skill in writing detective novels. With the proper use of it, writers can make readers feel curious and surprised. As a detective novel, the Da Vinci Code is a big success, to which the skillful use of suspense has contributed a lot. With the help of Reception Theory, this thesis analyses different types of suspense in the novel, finding out its effects in plot processing and character building, so as to present a comprehensive understanding of this writing skill.

1 Introduction
Dan Brown can be seen as the best-selling author in America today. His novel, the Da Vinci Code, has always ranked the top of the best-seller list of New York Times since it was published on 18th march, 2003. This novel is praised nationally and internationally. Terry Beck said: A major event in the publishing world, Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code inspired a stream of books reacting to its subjects and presentation; Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code is the best-known work of theology fiction (Beck, 2007, p. 18). Sales have passed the twenty million mark. It is detective and mysterious and has raised people’s interest in religion.
Former scholars studied the Da Vinci Code in several points, such as the religious symbols, the feminism and female images, the translation of the Chinese version etc. But there are mere studies about the suspense in it.
Suspense is a kind of psychological activities when people enjoy novels, movies or other literary works. It is a special skill in literature. It highlights an unusual situation but not to figure the truth out. This kind of incomplete situation will make reader curious about the truth and the following plots. In order to show the conflicts and contradictions, writers and movie directors will use many ways to make suspense so that the story will possess strong artistic attraction and appear more thoughtful.
So it is meaningful to study the suspense in the novel. With different ways, writers can make different kinds of suspense. The impacts of different suspense are also different in novels. That’s why the suspense is chosen to be the object of study.
Dan Brown is very successful in using suspense. And it is also one of the reasons that the Da Vinci Code is so popular. It can be seen that the writing skill of making suspense is important in a successful novel.
