Title Resistance and Pursuit——Comparison of Lin Daiyu and Jane Eyre's Love Views
Abstract
Lin Daiyu and Jane Eyre are two female characters depicted in Chinese and English literary works who have demonstrated the spirit of resistance. This paper aims to compare the characteristics of the times in which the two characters and their attitudes toward love. Both Lin Daiyu and Jane Eyre have got readers’ admiration for their female consciousness and their struggle for true love. Although their love stories end differently, they have positive inspirations on modern people's outlook of life.

1. Introduction
In this paper, two characters, Lin Daiyu from ‘A Dream of Red Mansions’written by Chinese novelist Cao Xueqing, and Jane Eyre from‘Jane Eyre’written by British writer Charlotte Bront, are chosen as objects of study for analyzing their respective love views. This paper aims to analyze the two different attitudes towards love from social and cultural perspectives. Both of the two novels enjoy great prestige as well as popularity in the literature history, exerting great influence on later literary creation, as well as shaping courageous heroines whose pursuit of freedom and love is worth our respect and admiration. The two charming heroines, Daiyu and Jane, have rendered countless readers to be obsessed with them with their unique temperament. They have certain similarities in their life experience, personality, and the pursuit of love. However, the love stories of the two females developed towards different endings. There are many reasons contributing to the different the widely different results of the two, and this paper sets out from the comparison between the Chinese and Western cultures, studying the differences concerning social and cultural factors, which can lead to a more profound understanding of the Chinese and British society in the 18th century.
2. Literature Review
At the beginning of the 20th Century, several scholars made their efforts to compare and contrast the two novels standing out from respectively eastern and western literary works. However, their studies are considered as relatively shallow understanding. With the development of world economy and culture, cultural and academic exchanges between eastern and western countries have become increasingly frequent, and a comparative study of the two works are also gradually increasing. Recent years have seen rich results from the comparative study of Jane Eyre and Lin Daiyu. Based on previous literature, research achievements can be listed as follows:
