Abstract English business letters, as a main media in commercial communication, play an important role in business activities. And the translation of English business letters is irreplaceable in modern economic activities. Through the comparison of characteristics of English and Chinese business letters, the translation principles of English business letters are concluded. And the paper elaborately discusses the translation techniques of words and sentences of English business letters by means of citing examples. Accordingly, it is extremely essential for a qualified English business letter translator to flexibly apply translation techniques of English business letters. The purpose of this paper is to offer people a better understanding of English business letters and act as a reference for the English business letters translation.

I. Introduction
In contemporary society, with the development of world economy and economic globalization, our country is developing at a high speed and exchanges between countries are increasingly close, especially in commercial sphere. More and more foreign enterprises invest and set up factories in China. When we take part in commercial activities with foreign enterprises, it is inevitable to use English business letter in these business activities. English business letter as the bridge linking the communication between different countries’ companies plays an irreplaceable role in promoting commercial exchanges between China and foreign countries. However, because of the different culture context of different countries, it is difficult to write or translate an appropriate English business letter. The analysis about English business letter translation can help understand the skills and the characteristics of English business letter, which contributes to translating these letters concisely, clearly, fluently and accurately.
The previous studies about the translation of English business letter are mainly based on the translation theories or principles. These studies are focused on Skopostheorie, faithfulness, expressiveness and elegance principles and Eugene Nida’s functional equivalency. The previous authors chiefly discussed how to translate English business letters under these principles and theories and the influences of these principles and theories to translation. These studies are helpful to people understand these principles and theories and the features of business letters. However, the studies about specific translation techniques and how to apply translation techniques to translate English business letters are relatively deficient.
