Abstract Translation is a kind of comprehensive ability in English. In the process of English translation, It is easy to grasp the translation of simple sentences, however, it is difficult to understand the English long sentences. Through the analysis of the current situation of English long sentences, the factors that have an effect on the differences between Chinese and English can be found. The thesis will make a detailed description for the problem. The correct understanding is the premise of the correct translation of the sentence structure. The analysis of the basic structure and the grammatical function of English long sentences, and the study of translation methods, which not only help the translators understand the differences between Chinese and English and improve the reading level but also lay the foundation to translating English long sentences correctly and accurately.

I. Introduction
English-Chinese translation is a course of converting the information in English into Chinese correctly, smoothly and coherently. Translation is a kind of embodiment of English comprehensive ability. In the process of English translation, a simple sentence is easy to grasp, but the translation of English long sentences are the most difficult to deal with. A long sentence is one with several attributes, subordinate and adverbial clauses, which are independent on the linked to each other. Long sentences are characterized by frequent use of attributive and adverbial clauses, compound structure, parenthesis and dangling structure. Because these sentences apply to more or longer modified language, it increases the difficulty of understanding and translating.
In the practice of translation, understanding is the prerequisite of expression. If we can not understand the sentences correctly, we can not express them precisely. Such is the translation of English long sentence whose advantage is that it is easy to express rigorous, meticulous logic and complex activity. In form, the long sentences mainly lie in the complicated structure with numerous levels and various modifiers. Therefore, the key of understanding the long sentences is to make out the original structure, distinguish the original level and understand the relationship between various modified components. In specific operations, we can grasp the center, and distinguish the levels. Firstly, we should catch the trunk of the whole sentence and understand the central idea. Secondly, we should find out the main ingredient and analyze the relationship between the various parts of the whole.
