Title Crime and Atonement On the morality and humanity of Atonement
Abstract
Atonement is a famous work of McEwan，a contemporary British writer. Since the publishment of Atonement, it has been popular with readers, and has been studied a lot by scholars. This thesis analyses the causes of Briony, the heroine’s crime, what she has suffered and her ways of atonement. The thesis reaches the conclusion that once a crime is committed against one’s conscience, it is difficult to get relieved and gain atonement.

1. Introduction
McEwan plays an important role in the history of English literature. Many of his works have become classical literature of American. His works are mostly short stories. Most of the content is beyond the reader's expectations, and the plots undulate, so that it wins the reputation "black comedy". Many works reflect the dominated power about sex on people and humanity distortion under the role of sexual desire. There is a recurring theme in McEwan's novel, that is, “He remains fascinated with the forbidden and the taboo, which he continues to describe with non-judgmental precision.” (Finney, 2004, p78). Since the publishment of Ian McEwan's novel ——Atonement in 2001, which honored with the “contemporary narrative classic” caused a hot debate in the field of academia and the mass media.
His early works and late works have different styles. However, the novel Atonement is uncharacteristic, the plot of which is simple. There are no obvious ethical issues, but he does not give moral judgment to his novel. Atonement, with Briony as the heroine, tells a story about her crime, atonement, relief and the whole process. This process is simple, and has no duplicate plot. The description of the character's inner world is very vivid. It mainly describes Briony’s relief, which is the resistance to belief and the atonement of ethic in terms of the concept in Christian ethics. Early Christians used to be famous for rigorous morality. "In the era of the apostles, the church is certainly imagined to be made up of spiritual and experienced Christians. … Christian shows up in the way of a new faith, and the people of the church are of personal beliefs. They make a very big sacrifice for this". And it is created in different aspects and the themes totally differ. Atonement highlights the author's voice, emphasizes the narrative authority, and shows the function of literature of the moral teachings (Hu, 2014).
