Title The Discursive Construction of the Elderly in Chinese News Reports
Abstract
The acceleration of aging society in China has required a deep discussion on the image, position and power of the elderly. In this study, reports of "Yangtse Evening News" and "Guangming Daily" from January to April in 2014 are collected. Based on the linguistic theories of identity construction, this study will analyze the collected data and draw a conclusion of the differences in images constructed by the local newspapers and the official newspapers. It can be concluded that there are more reports on the elderly in the official newspapers than those in local newspaper, and reports in the official newspapers are mainly neutral, while reports in local newspapers are more about trivialities and in a negative tone. The images constructed in the two newspapers are basically similar. Old people's old, valetudinarian, little difference in gender and respectable images are their features in news reports. The difference in images is that the official reports focus less on the health condition than local reports. This study is aimed to help the readers understand the images of the elderly in newspapers, and to help the press to be aware of constructing the elderly identities objectively.
