Abstract The American film The Shawshank Redemption is adapted from the famous writer Stephen King novella Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption. The paper will expatiate on the themes of hope and freedom in it. In this film, freedom and hope exist both as contradictions and as the perfect combination. The protagonist Andy combines hope and freedom in difficulties, and eventually gets redemption. This film expresses a kind of lasting friendship, indomitable spirit, and hopeful pursuit. It makes us realize that the most valuable things in life are hope and freedom. As long as there is hope and freedom, everyone can get redemption in any difficulties.

I. Introduction
The Shawshank Redemption is an American film which reorganized from the work Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption of the famous writer Stephen King. The film narrates the amazing story of Andy Dufresne, a banker who is sentenced to life in Shawshank State Prison because of the murder of his wife and her lover despite his claims of innocence. In Shawshank, Andy is quickly befriended by a fellow inmate Ellis Boyd Red who is hopeless about life and freedom. Unlike him, Andy still has undeniable sense of hope, and this causes his inmate Red to take a deeper look at himself, and the world around him. Andy proves to Red and the other inmates that in this hopeless prison, hope is the only way to get freedom from heart. Andy keeps hope all the time. He spends twenty years in preparing and carrying out the plan of escaping to the beautiful outside world. Through his own efforts, Andy not only escapes from the prison, but also saves a group of inmates.
The film encourages us to love life and arouses us to cherish the most precious thing in our life. It also has a positive influence on confronting the hardship in our whole life. It makes us realize that common life is valuable. In prison, Andy uses his persistence and courage to overcome all the difficulties. Maybe we will think about that why we can not afford the predicament of life. The film makes us deem that we should never give up freedom and hope in hardship.
