However, traditional exam-oriented English teaching is single and the materials in present high school are out of date, which can’t fully stimulate student’s interest in learning and improve their ability to use English. It is well known that classroom reading is the uppermost way for students to learn English, which can cultivate students’ English ability. In senior high schools, lots of problems still exist in English teaching methods, for example, study only based on textbooks, which can’t help students’ reading comprehension and meet their demands. It is necessary for us to find a new way to change the current reading situation. Therefore, improving the students’ English reading ability seems to be the focus of English teaching. Students also want to get the latest language, so both teachers and students should give enough emphasis on English reading.
Compared with textbooks, English newspapers and magazines are modern, authentic and practical; their published articles have strong topicality, are interesting enough and are close to our daily life. All these can greatly make up with the narrow range of knowledge in the textbooks and the disability between language and daily life.
