Abstract Family values are the core in the research of cultural values. It has a decisive effect on people’s behavior. To some extent, the values of society are decided by family values. This paper introduces the differences between Chinese and American family values through the method of comparison and analyzes the reasons that cause the differences from different aspects. The research on differences between Chinese and Americans family values can help both Chinese and Americans further understand each other and reduce conflicts in communication. The society is undergoing great changes. Some traditional family values can’t be adapted to the current Chinese development. We should remove old-fashioned family values and absorb the advanced values from America so as to form excellent family values with Chinese characteristics.

Cross-cultural Analysis of the Differences between Chinese and American Family Values
I. Introduction
With the rapid development of science and technology, intercultural communication becomes more and more important and frequent. The world is becoming smaller and smaller. Common people can travel, learn and do business abroad. However, different countries have different family values. In China, for example, if a child makes a mistake, parents can punish him. On the contrary, in the United States, it is illegal to punish child. As a result, some people think that family values between China and the United States are completely different. Delis Gill said that each society has its own traditional values. The core of Chinese values is to emphasize collectivism. The interests of the inpidual must obey collective interests (30). Americans pay more attention inpidualism. Chinese culture is one of the typical representatives of oriental culture. American culture is the blend of western cultures ( Davis 33).
