摘 要《觉醒》出版于1899年,是美国十九世纪著名女作家凯特.肖邦的代表作。它讲述的是女主人公艾德娜不甘扮演贤妻良母的角色,渴望并追求自由的故事。本文试图分析作品中三个女性人物的形象,介绍了作者及其主要作品,对作品中的三位主要女性人物形象,以及他们所处的不同社会环境及思想意识进行具体分析,以重现19世纪男权社会中女性社会地位,从而得出在男权社会中,所有的女性都是受害者这一残酷的结论,以便我们更好地理解该作品的主题内涵。40510

Abstract The Awakening was published in 1899, is the masterpiece of the American female writer Kate Chopin, who lived in the 19th century. It tells the story of the heroine Edna who is unwilling to play the role of wife and mother, and it is also the story of desire and the pursuit of freedom. This paper attempts to analyze the three female characters in the work, which confirms the feminist consciousness in the works of Chopin, After introducing Kate Chopin’s life and her major works, the paper will focus on the analysis of the main female characters and the male-centered social status and ideology in which they lived in. Thus it shows the cruel conclusion that all the women are victims in the patriarchal society, So that we can understand the connotation of topic of the work in an even better fashion.

I. Introduction

The Awakening is the representative work of Kate Chopin, and the final  masterpiece of her writing career. During her writing career (1888-1904), Kate Chopin was regarded as a talented local color writer for her two favorable collections that were mainly set in the State of Louisiana and established in her reputation literature. Kate Chopin lived in the United States of the 19th century, in which era, women’s social status was very low. They were the accessories of the society and family, and they didn’t have their own independent life. After being neglected in the early twentieth century, Chopin’s works were revalued. In other words, Kate Chopin writes this novel to express the desire of women. The Awakening is a process that is lonely, desperate and painful for women at that time. It is also the test of life and death. Edna died eventually after struggled lonely. But she can understand that she can’t live without the self. That is the meaning of awakening. Kate Chopin hoped Edna can make it out of the patriarchy in that time. 
The Awakening tells about the heroine Edna is unwilling to play the role of wife and mother, and it is also the story of desire and the pursuit of freedom. Edna is not only a submissive female character, she is also full of a strong brave, active male character. At the same time, the purpose of this paper is to dig deep to Edna to show the character of the novel has very profound significance and struggle to explore her awakening from the spirit to reality, finally seek the deep meaning of unity and liberation.
