Abstract Hua Mulan is a legendary female in Chinese traditional culture. In the book of Yuefu Poetry, The Ballad of Mulan has enjoyed great popularity in China to this day. It was made into a famous movie by American Disney Company in 1998 and named Mulan. Using the method of comparison, this paper makes an analysis on The Ballad of Mulan and its Disney’s version from the intercultural communication perspective, it intends to show the visible and invisible differences existed in both Chinese and American cultures. Meanwhile, it is hoped that this paper can enhance people’s cultural sensitivity and increase their knowledge and understanding of other cultures when they read the poem or watch the movie, and then ensure the better development of intercultural communication.
