从语言禁忌现象看中英文化差异

Abstract Taboos, a form of language, have some cultural significance for language is regarded as the carrier of culture. It varies a lot both in form and content under the influence of different cultures. Taboos refer to the words which people won’t apply in normal days. By such way, it regulates people’s behavior and social communication. With more and more frequent intercultural communication, it is essential to acquire the knowledge about taboos for a better effect of interaction. In the paper, it will present the cultural difference in the Chinese and English from taboos and it includes the origin and function, etc. From the concrete example, readers could have a better understanding of the difference on taboos between the Chinese and English caused by different cultural backgrounds.

I. Introduction
Language is a social phenomenon and always influenced by various social and cultural factors. It reflects the national culture and mode of thinking, regarded as the embodiment of the culture. On the other hand, culture is the sum of the beliefs, living habits, life patterns and behaviors for different nationalities. Different nations have different cultural backgrounds which affect the development of language. Therefore, to be a outstanding foreign leaner, it is necessary to acquire the knowledge of other countries’ culture. Taboos, as a part of language, are connected with the culture inevitably and play a important role in the international communication. With the development of globalization and information, people in different region with different cultural backgrounds communicate with each other more and more frequently. Provided one offends the religion or customs of an alien country, he may loses the friendship or even suffers the danger of life. So it is essential to learn the taboos when meeting the alien.
