1 Introduction

Gone with the Wind is the only work of Margaret Mitchell, an American novelist, who devoted herself to finishing this magnificent work for ten years. There were scarcely writers famous for only one literary work, but Margaret Mitchell was just the unique writer. After the publication of Gone with the Wind in 1936, she was known around America even around the world in a short time.

Margaret Mitchell was born in Atlanta in 1900. Influenced by her parents, in her childhood, Margaret was curious about the period of war, which was unknown to her and urged her to explore the traces of that history. When she was a child, she preferred to ride with the company of veterans because they would make a detailed description about their experiences in the war, indulging her curiosity and inspiring her imagination, which were the prototypes of this great work, Gone with the Wind. She had been awarded a doctorate in literature and became a famous journalist engaged in her favorite work of writing. Because of this work, she won the Pulitzer Prize in 1937 and a gold medal of New York Southern Association in 1939.

The setting of Gone with the Wind was Atlanta and a plantation nearby Atlanta. It portrayed the southerner’s life before and after the Civil War in the United States as well as the images of many southerners, among which Scarlett, Rhett, Ashley and Melanie were the typical examples. Combined with their etiquette customs, behavior manners, spiritual beliefs and political attitudes, the main storyline of the love story between Scarlett and Rhett reproduced the social life of southern area during the Civil War in the United States. This novel completely presents all kinds of people’s changes of destiny in the great social transition by showing different characteristics. Moved by countless readers, it has been adopted into movies and translated into numbers of languages in different countries. The epic battle scenes, the exquisite characters and the poetic language interpret a touching love story. The story of Gone with the Wind was based on the reliable historical background and combined with Margaret’s personal experiences. For example, the prototype of Ashley is the first lover of Margaret. And those sufferings of Scarlett are just the reflections of Margaret own experiences.
