Abstract George Orwell employed symbolism to vivify the boring political critical novels and thus his novels are worth deep thinking to better appreciate his creative art. George Orwell not only inherits symbolism but also develops symbolism. And in writing style, format and scope,  he is not limited to general symbolism of writing. By starting from the concept of symbolism, the paper combines George Orwell life experience with his works. At same time this paper also analyzes the application of symbolism in his Animal Farm, and then summarizes the influence of symbolism in Animal Farm on future generations and contemporary. By understanding the symbolism’s application in Animal Farm, readers can get a better appreciation of the author's creative arts, really experience and comprehend the application of symbolism.

A Brief Study of Symbolism in Animal Farm

I. Introduction

   The famous novel Animal Farm is one of the works written by George Orwell. This novel is his masterpiece and published in England in 1945. Time regards the book as one of the 100 best English-language novels. Animal Farm is a political fable style novel. The story describes an “animal”revolution from brewing, rising and final transformation. The animals in farm couldn’t put up with the humans masters Mr. Jones’ oppress, so the animals first rebelled against the humans master under the guidance of a old pig named old Major, then thrown out the humans master Mr. Jones. Finally those animals achieved the old pig’s ambition of “self-determination” and renamed the farm for “animal farm”, and put the slogan “all animals are equal” into practice. Then the old Major died after three days. Later, two leading pig conflicted with each other for power, and the winner pig Napoleon announced that the other party Snowball was the traitor. Since then, for the leadership of the pig. Napoleon has more and more right, and becomes the new ruling class. If the other animals are not satisfied with the leader pig, Napoleon will start a bloody cleaning. The ideal of the farm was revised to “some animals are more equal than other animals”, pigs become the some animals who are more equal than other animals, the animals back to the previous state. The writer George Orwell is a famous British novelist reporter and critic. Animal Farm is one of the masterpieces of George Orwell. He has a lot of famous books, Burmese Days, Nineteen Eighty-four and so on. He believes communism, and is against totalitarianism. And he works for the poor people in his whole life. He cares the living condition of the poor, and learns through their personal experience in London and Paris. Then he writes the book about the time in London and Paris, named Down and Out in Paris and London. George Orwell is great as a person, and as a writer he influences many people in the world.
