Abstract    Emily Bronte and her only work Wuthering Heights receive high evaluation in the world of literature, which gets comments from different angles by critics all over the world. Based on careful reading and studying of the novel, the thesis is about Gothic elements in Wuthering Heights from the perspective of theme, characters, setting and so on. The thesis is made up of four parts. The first part is an introduction of Wuthering Heights. In the second part, paper shows the definition, the origin, the development of the Gothic. And in the third part, the paper analyzes the Gothic features in detail. The last part analyzes Emily Bronte’s characters which are influenced by the background of time and family environment. The aim of this paper is to reveal the Gothic charm of Wuthering Heights and attract more readers, especially young people to appreciate classic works.

I. Introduction

Gothic is a special literary genre which is popular from 13th to 15th century. And as a typical Gothic novel, Wuthering Heights appeared in 18th century when the Gothic novels had a great influence on the works of many of the novelists. Since the novel was published, most of writers studied it from different angles, such as, the characters in this novel, the feminism, humanity analysis and so on. Differently, the paper holds that the Gothic characteristics of Wuthering Heights are more worthy of study. What’s more, it can help to find more charms of the novel through the exploration of the Gothic features. This paper analyses the Gothic features in Wuthering Heights from the theme, the character, the setting and the mysterious color. Besides, the paper analyses the personality characteristics of Emily Bronte in order to help readers understand the novel better.
